Many women are asking themselves- Am I ovulating? How do I know if I am ovulating? Am I ovulating every cycle?

Many report that they used to get good signs of ovulation but haven’t for the last few months or couple of years, maybe since having fertility treatment or after a miscarriage. Many women also report that they are not sure if they have any signs of ovulation at all.

Blood tests can indicate if ovulation is likely- usually done around day 21 of the cycle or 7 days after ovulation. An ultrasound/sonogram done around mid-cycle can also confirm ovulation.

How do you know if you are ovulating?

Some women take their basal body temperature every morning to predict that ovulation has happened, while many also find this a frustrating process.

Ovulation prediction tests can also be useful but can also be frustrating as you need to have an idea of when to test. They can also be expensive. In the case of women with polycystic ovaries they may show positive for the entire cycle when they are not ovulating.

In my experience your bodies own signs are the best way to predict ovulation and give you the best keys as to the timing for conception. At the end of menstruation you will normally have a few days when you are not fertile. Then you will begin to get some watery or wet secretions, known as cervical mucus(CM).

This should then increase in volume until you get to your peak mucus day- which should be the classic egg white stretchy mucus- you should be able to stretch it several inches between your finger and thumb. The CM then goes back to the wet secretions. You should have CM over about 5 days, which is when timing for conception is ideal.

If you aren’t getting the CM described above then maybe you have a slight hormonal imbalance. There is plenty you can do about this- start with all the measures described in the other articles here. If you need further help maybe an Online Fertility Consultation would be helpful. I have helped many women to ovulate more efficiently which normally helps them to get pregnant fast.

Here is one example-

Tina was 37 and had been trying to get pregnant for 3 years when I first met her in 2007. Her cycle was regular but she showed no obvious signs of ovulation. She had tried ovulation prediction tests which had never shown a positive result. She was not keen on any medical tests and as I had assisted her friend and sister to get fertile and get pregnant she was confident that I could help her also. She needed to make quite a few changes to her diet and lifestyle as she had a ‘sweet tooth’ that she fed constantly.

I put her on a fertility diet to aid hormonal balancing and decrease insulin resistance, I also recommended an exercise program and some supplements as well as homeopathic remedies. She lost quite a lot of weight from her abdomen in the first month and also noted a healthier flow with her menstrual cycle. It took 3 months before she started to get any CM and by 5 months she had plenty. This coincided with feeling much healthier. On the 7th month she came to see me and proudly produced a positive pregnancy test from her handbag and declared ‘I knew you would do it’- I said that she had done all the work & that her husband had to take some credit!

Tina has just celebrated her 40th birthday and is currently 34 weeks pregnant with her second baby.

So if you think you are having problems and not ovulating healthily then start by taking a look at your diet and lifestyle. Then see what else you need to do- get help if you need it.
