First Trimester


During this stage, the mother gains up to 3 kilos of weight. The weight gain is usually due to the enlargement of the breasts and the development of the placenta. Pregnancy in older women is far more prevalent than ever before. More and more women today are waiting until they are more financially and emotionally ready to have children, often in their late 30’s or early 40’s. In fact, I was one of these statistics. I became pregnant for the first time at the age of thirty nine. And I was having twins. While being older definitely brings increased risks along with it, it also brings increased maturity. I was manic about my diet and fitness. I followed all of my doctor’s orders to a tee, and I was constantly reading and researching all the material I could get my hands on. Through all of my experience I have three things I would recommend to all women who have a pregnancy later in life. First, is nutrition.


Eat foods that are high in Folic acid, calcium and iron, and take supplements if needed. And, of course, avoid all of the potentially harmful intakes, like caffeine, alcohol, smoking, etc.. While a woman in her early 20’s may be able to “cheat” on these no-nos from time to time with little or no increased risk, those of us approaching 40 need to play it much safer. Next, I would recommend a doctor approved exercise program. Not only did this make feel great physically, but emotionally I think it really helped.


I found myself much more relaxed, and a lot of the anxiety I was having pretty much went away. It really cleared my mind. And last, but certainly not least, is to find other women to talk to. I found a program on-line that a lot of other pregnant women belonged to. There was just something so reassuring about talking to other women my age who were going through the same things I was at the same time I was going through them. Talking to someone who had a child later in life, a couple of years ago, just wasn’t the same thing. While she could certainly relate to what I was going through, her anxiety was over with.


She already delivered a healthy baby. But talking with older women who were pregnant at the same time as me, was very reassuring. Well, there you have it. I followed doctor approved diet and exercise programs, and I found a “support group” of women my age going through their pregnancies at the same time I was. The result was a very comfortable, problem free, and for the most part relaxed pregnancy, and just two weeks short of full term I delivered two healthy baby boys. To any women reading this article, who are around my age, and are either pregnant or contemplating becoming pregnant, I have one last piece of advice. Whether this is your first pregnancy or not, it is more than likely your last. Try to relax and enjoy it.

I have often found that despite not eating for eight hours or more, my blood sugar levels can be quite high first thing in the morning. It is therefore important that diabetics check their blood sugar levels at least three times a day; before breakfast before lunch and before the evening meal as a minimum.


This is particularly important if you are taking insulin and you are just your insulin dose for each meal. It’s impossible to know what that dose should be unless you first know what your actual blood glucose levels are. It is also important, if you are taking insulin, to take a reading first thing in the morning after fasting all night.


However, keeping tight control of your diabetes by the use of insulin can lead to a greater risk of a hypoglycaemic episode than those who control their diabetes by diet and exercise alone. This can be particularly awkward if you are pregnant or ill, making it especially important to keep regular checks on your blood glucose throughout the day.


If you are not taking insulin to control your diabetes but are using a combination of diet and exercise, the situation is a little different. This is because you cannot control your glucose levels in the same way as someone who is taking insulin and can adjust their dose. It may be that your doctor asks you to take glucose readings before breakfast and dinner, but this is to keep a more general track of your sugar levels so that your diabetes can be monitored and if necessary medication or insulin introduced at a later date.


It can also be quite stressful for type 2 diabetics who are not controlling their diabetes with insulin to check their blood glucose levels regularly. This is because it can lead to worry, stress and depression if they see that their sugars are higher than they should be but they can do little about it, as opposed to those who do use insulin and who can simply respond by increasing the dose.

One of the most important variables to consider when you want to choose your baby’s gender is vaginal PH. If this is acidic, then you have a greater chance of conceiving a girl. If it is alkaline, then the odds are better that you will have a boy. But, what happens if you test yourself and your PH is all wrong? For example, let’s say you want a girl baby but test and find out that you’re extremely alkaline. Or what if you want a boy and are already highly acidic?


You don’t have to just blindly accept your current level. You can change your PH with roughly three different methods. I will discuss this more in the following article.


Changing Your Diet To Change Your PH: One of the more common ways to tweak PH is by changing your diet. Foods are typically either acidic or alkaline. So if you want to become more acidic, then you’d add the applicable foods to your diet and eliminate alkaline foods until you see the reading that you want. If you want to be more alkaline, you’d still clear of acidic foods. There are food lists that can tell you where your foods fall, but you have to be really careful because some foods begin with a certain acidity but then change once they are broken down in your body. So, it’s quite possible for these exception type foods to have the opposite effect.


To be safe, I often advise folks to start out with a good food list, but then to test their PH regularly after meals and to make notations of any food that’s not acting as it should. Everyone is individual. The foods that make big changes and improvements for your best friend may not work in the same way for you. That’s why, at least in my opinion, it’s so important to have a good food list and then to test to make sure that your body is responding in the way that you hoped.


Douching To Change Your PH: Another way to become more acidic or alkaline (depending on whether you want a boy or a girl) is to douche. I know that the mental picture of this can be unsavory, but this isn’t a practice that you have to embrace for the rest of your life. You’ll only need to make this part of your routine until you become pregnant.


You’ll also want to give yourself enough time. People sometimes assume that they can just use vinegar and water or baking soda and water right before they have sex and then be fine, but this usually is not enough. Typically, you’ll need stronger solutions used more than once. And, as with the diet, you’ll want to test after each attempt to change your PH to make sure that you’re getting the desired results.


Douching At The Same Time That You’re Changing Your Diet: Sometimes, people try one of these methods and test as I’ve advised but they just aren’t happy with the speed of their results. I sometimes hear comments like “at this rate, it’ll be months before my PH is right to conceive a boy.” Although they might be a bit overly dramatic in this assumption, it’s understandable to want to attempt to conceive as soon as possible. One way to accomplish this is to combine both methods. Often, if you’re willing to do this, you’ll see quicker results.


Yes, it can be a lot to keep up with what you eat while continuing to douche and test. But, this also usually means you’ll be rewarded with a shorter period of time that you have to keep this up and to some people, this makes combining both worth it.


Finally, your PH is not the only variable that you need to worry about when trying to control your baby’s gender. You will also want to get your timing right as well as use the correct corresponding sexual positions, depending on whether you want a girl or a boy.

So you are finally pregnant after however many heart-wrenching soul-and-budget-destroying tries at IVF.


Is it time to relax? To cut loose, feel normal again, to let your soon-to-be-luxuriant-thanks-to-pregnancy-hormones-hair down? Time to join all the other smug pregnants shopping at Egg and flaunting their bellies at every snatched opportunity?


By all means feel free to try but there are those of us, who, after so much worry and hopelessness, find it hard to stop worrying and rid ourselves of the nagging spectre of doom. After the euphoria of the positive pregnancy test wears off a feeling of anxiety, even fear can replace it.


Oh my God, how am I going to cope with twins/triplets/quads? What if after all this I miscarry? Will my baby/s be normal? Why am I thinking this stuff?


Maybe part of the reason lies with the fact that an IVF pregnancy is illuminated at every step of the way. There’s barely a minute when you aren’t being tested for something and monitored for something else long before you even conceive and beyond, until the end of the first trimester.


Firstly there’s all the blood screening tests then the drug screening tests, the ultrasounds, then when your baby is barely more than a four cell genetic (and oh so cute – looks like DH when he first wakes up) cluster you get to see it on a screen and it gets a rating.


Meantime you are following its progress like you’re the paparazzi and it’s Paris Hilton. You’re obsessed with every detail, how many cells is it now, is it a Grade One or Two, how’s it doing? Is it transfer-worthy? Is it implantation worthy? How’s it doing? It’s only eight cells and you’re turning into an anxious parent mulling over its achievements.


On the day of the transfer, you’re up at dawn, having not slept a wink. After the transfer you feel every little twinge, you don’t want to drive or make any sudden movement in case you dislodge it. You become constipated for fear of it falling out when you go to the toilet.


You cross off not the days but the hours, the minutes, until the pregnancy test. No wonder, by the time you get it, you’re exhausted. Then there is the scan to wait for before it becomes an official positive. You get to see the tiny pole beating. Then, if you’re 35 or over you have the further abnormality testing to get through and another scan at the end of the first trimester.


Meantime the non-fertility challenged woman has had sex, merrily gone on her way probably drinking and generally obliviously enjoying herself. At some stage she realized her period was late and peed on a stick. Oh, OK, I ‘m pregnant. A couple of months later she rocks up at the obstetrician’s office for her first appointment.


So it’s little wonder the woman experiencing pregnancy after IVF may suffer higher anxiety levels than a non-fertility challenged woman and surprising that more of us don’t end up sedated.


What do the statistics say? Is the IVF pregnancy less likely to succeed? Marginally. There is a higher rate of miscarriage although this is largely due to IVF being prevalent amongst those over 35, where the rates of miscarriage are higher anyway.


There is a higher risk of premature birth but again this is so for multiple pregnancies or older women too. So there is nothing conclusive to say we should worry more but, I say, after all we’ve been through you can hardly blame us, can you?

Sandra’s story


Sandra finally decided to get an IVF after a year of trying to conceive naturally. When her pregnancy test finally came in, however, she was shocked beyond belief to see a negative result. She was so sure that she would get pregnant and did not prepare for the cycle to fail. The pain of a failed cycle was deeper than she imagined, but she eventually mustered the courage to give IVF another shot. Her second IVF will start in just a couple of weeks, but Sandra finds herself just as optimistic as the first time.


Abby’s story


Abby’s fertility journey was long and frustrating. She and her husband were diagnosed with unexplained infertility, but they decided to give IVF a shot so she could hopefully get pregnant quickly. She was filled with optimism during her first IVF – there were nine eggs retrieved, seven fertilized, and two top-grade embryos. Unfortunately, the pregnancy didn’t take, and Abby was devastated to no end. After a month, she decided to try again. This time, there were fewer eggs – seven retrieved, five fertilized, and two embryos. To play it safe, she decided to switch to organic food and avoid the environmental chemicals lurking in meat. The cycle still did not work. Once she was done grieving, Abby and her husband had a long discussion and decided that the next IVF would be their last; they could no longer afford a fourth try. However, they would do ICSI with the cycle to increase the chances of getting pregnant. During her third IVF, seven eggs were retrieved and five were fertilized. Three embryos were transferred after assisted hatching – two grade A embryos, and one average embryo. The two week wait was the worst because she knew it was her last, but Abby did her best to stay positive. To keep herself occupied, she enrolled in a yoga class, cleared out the attic, organized her closet, and held a garage sale – a chore she had always been meaning to do but never found the motivation to accomplish. In the end, everything she went through was worth the struggle because she finally got pregnant! She is due to give birth to her daughter soon.


Liza’s story


For Liza, IVF was her one shot at pregnancy. She just discovered that she had a bi-cornial uterus, which explains why attempts at trying to conceive naturally kept failing. A bi-cornial uterus is a heart-shaped deformity of the uterus that is commonly associated with high-risk pregnancies. It also meant that her eggs cannot reach the uterus. For her first IVF cycle, she opted for a five-day incubation period with a freeze in between. The two week wait was perhaps the hardest part of her fertility journey. She had never gotten a fertility treatment until then and it didn’t occur to her how difficult it would be to just sit and wait for news of her cycle. To pass the time, she decided to pick up her crochet hooks and learn to make baby clothes. On the tenth day, she finally got tired of waiting and took a home pregnancy test against her doctor’s advice. A very faint line emerged, which made her heart jump – but she tried to contain her feelings when she saw that the pregnancy test expired. In four days, her blood test at the clinic was due and she finally let out tears of joy when she saw the positive result. Her baby boy is due next month and they are both doing great!
