Man, you did it this time, didn’t you? Yea, that’s right, you’re going to be a dad. Question is, you know less about being pregnant than she does, so what can do you? There’s help, and it’s coming in the form of this informative article. There are forty weeks in a pregnancy, and thing are developing rapidly, so it’s your job to be supportive and wonderful. That’s a big job, but read on because you can do this. Here is a blow by blow of what to look for – and what to avoid.

The first four weeks are generally quiet. There’s not a lot of symptoms, but hormones are going to rage anyhow. In the second month, things get hairy and you can start to tell something is definitely going on – she’s complaining that she’s tired, that her boobs hurt and her period is missing. She’s peeing a whole lot too, so maybe it’s time to trot to the drug store and buy her that test to show your support. If it’s positive, you can be a great help by not panicking. During the next four weeks, there will be a lot of vomiting, so while you’re out, stock up on crackers and ginger ale to ease her stomach. Also, there will be hormonal shifts and whatnot, so there might be a lot of tears shed over every single thing – get some tissues too.

In weeks five and six, you can expect to be in the dog house at least once for getting her pregnant, and by the end of the seventh and eighth week, don’t mention the pimples that have cropped up, and do not point out that she’s gained any weight. By weeks nine and ten, the cravings will kick in. Go ahead and get those sardines and mint ice cream. Her body is telling her that she needs the nutrients in what she’s wanting, even if it’s completely gross. Smells will set off nausea so be aware that you might have to change your aftershave or not cook bacon any more.

If you are a smart man, you will just patiently listen to her complain at week eleven that she’s got horrible heartburn and you smell like a pig. Then you will bring her some antacid and go shower. Week 12 will begin a little pouch and some of these symptoms will start to disappear. You are done with the first trimester, but this is far from over.

When you approach the fourth month, weeks 13 and 14 might bring a little relief. Her body is adjusting to the hormones and she’s not crying as much or vomiting… or crying because she’s vomiting. Her stomach could be itchy, and it’s your job to break out the lotion and help. Your woman should be showing by this time, but be sensitive about it. Say the wrong thing and you’ll be building the doghouse that you will sleep in because she smashed the last one. Swollen ankles and an achy back are starting to be the norm, and don’t you dare laugh if she says she can’t poop. She can’t help it.

By week 16, she should be feeling some movement and would invite you to rub her belly. Do it, even if it freaks you out when you literally see her tummy move! During the upcoming weeks, 17 and 18, you could find out the gender of the baby, and will be able to start picking out clothes and names. If you find yourself arguing, stand your ground but don’t be a jerk. This week by week pregnancy thing can be difficult!

Week 20 can mean headaches and nosebleeds, but don’t be alarmed, it’s common. The upcoming time is virtually all growth and side effects. Haemorrhoids, pimples, rashes, itchiness, leg cramps, varicose veins and blotchy patches are all ready to strike and by week 25, you can add fake contractions to the list of ailments. Again, the best thing you can do is not panic, and perhaps suggest Lamaze classes.

Around 28 or 30 weeks, your doctor might recommend that she take a glucose tolerance test to combat gestational diabetes. She is getting big by now, but don’t you dare tell her that! Remind her that she’s pregnant for a reason! Week 32, things are getting hairy and you should be getting your nursery ready. She will feel the instinct to clean and set things up, but keep her calm and limit her to what she’s supposed to be doing. Don’t let her get on a ladder because she’s a bit off balance.

The baby might stop moving at about week 37, but that’s okay! There’s not a whole lot of room in there, and the next bit of moving baby will do is going to be shifting into position. Week 40 should be the end of the line and you are ready to experience sleepless nights. Week by week, pregnancy seems like a long time, but it will fly by before you know it.
