During the formative stages of the fetus in a woman’s womb, a pregnant woman should ensure that she intakes all the necessary nutrition as this is very important to the child’s health. Minerals such as iron, calcium and others, are important both before and during pregnancy for the health of mother and child, therefore the need for more intake of folic acid. Along with the minerals, Prenatal vitamins are also of vital importance.

Food provides for a large percentage of all the minerals and body supplements that we require, but we could easily leave out some important minerals without our knowledge. That is why prenatal vitamins are important especially in the second and third stages of pregnancy. During this stages, the woman’s body makes strenuous effort to supply to the baby or even babies in cases of multiple pregnancies.

The type of prenatal supplements to be administered is best determined by blood tests carried out on the pregnant woman and they should always be used in combination with minerals. The tests are basically to determine calcium and iron levels in the blood. There is inter-relation between the action of both types of substances. Calcium and phosphorus processing depends on vitamin C and D3 while iron is related to the B complex and various other substances.

These supplements however, should be taken with utmost care especially in cases where the mother is on other medication, since exposure to negative reactions may occur. All the same a healthy balanced diet should be maintained with cheese, milk, eggs and a lot of vegetables being essential food items.
